Tell the Truth Tuesday: Easter

I have a love hate relationship with Easter. I grew up going to a rather strict Baptist church where Holy week was a big deal, so I got to know the days of Holy week and actually like them. The town I grew up in was rather religious as a whole, so on Good Friday, most of town would shut down from 1-3 so everyone could go to church. I always enjoyed the quietness of Good Friday services; for something so sad for Christians, it was also such a hopeful time as well and you could feel it in the air. Easter Sunday of course is probably the most beautiful church service of the year (in my opinion!) and the sunshine, flowers, and just the general NEWNESS of the holiday is nice. Even though we don't regularly go to church anymore, Easter Sunday is still probably my favorite religious holiday...which is why I'm torn on it.

When I was 18, my grandmother passed away the week before Easter and we were all together for her funeral and then a week later we were all back together trying to pretend to be happy and cheerful when all of us were clearly grieving. My grandma was the one (at least in my mind) who *made* the holidays. We were always at her house or my uncles' house with her bossing everyone around and most of my memories from the holidays are of her. The year she dumped WAY too much sage in the gravy at thanksgiving and created her fantastic green gravy; the year my father dropped her gravy bowl, the year she complained loudly that no one ever remembered what she wanted for Christmas as she was unwrapping the gift she'd told us about months ago, and the bag of potpourri that she and my father passed back and forth as a gift for years because neither one of them wanted the other to NOT have it. The year she died, joy at Easter slipped away for me.

For the kids' sake, we dye eggs, we do baskets, bunnies, and egg hunts but it's hard for me-I always wonder what my grandma would be like with all these great grandchildren. I have a feeling she'd be overrun with fluffy bunnies and chicks JUST to make them all happy...and some baby pigs as well, maybe some turkeys, probably a dog or two...I'd imagine they'd all be as happy as my cousins and I were at her house; playing on the swings, climbing in the hayloft and chasing kittens, and swinging on the huge branches of the weeping willow in her yard.

And now you know my secret about Easter...

Oh My

Today Bitsy had to go to the allergist to start her allergy shots. She's allergic to dust and mold and the doctor, Geo, and I decided that starting allergy shots now would be the best course of action. She's miserable pretty much all year long because you really can't get rid of all the dust in the house and mold is always somewhere.

So we went to the allergist, we walked into the back where she saw the GIANT needles (which were about half an inch in length, at most) and decided she wasn't doing it and took off running. She ran through the back room, out to the front of the office and out the door. When I finally caught up with her, she was sitting in the car with the doors locked sobbing. She screamed "I AM NOT DOING THIS YOU CAN'T MAKE ME GO AWWWWAY"

I got her out of the car-literally kicking and screaming the whole way and wrestled her back into the office for the shots. She continued to carry on until good ole Dr. G came out to talk to her. She LOVES Dr. G, even if she does think his hair is "super creepy". Dr. G came out and talked to her and calmed her down and we got the shots taken care of. Oh the drama. THE DRAAAAMA.

After she got five hundred stickers and an ice pack, we sat in the waiting room to make sure she wasn't going to have a reaction. Bits and Aubrey (who came with us because she likes to come with us and she KNEW we were going to play with bunnies after the appointment) sat in the waiting room like two little old ladies; they were comparing stories about getting shots and going to the doctor. That calmed Bitsy down significantly and the office staff finally stopped laughing about the whole thing. I was mortified to be very honest and wanted nothing more than to come home and have a cold beer or seventeen...

We went and pet some bunnies, we bought stuffed bunnies, annnnd we had slurpees and all was right with the world again...until next week when we go back for round two. (did I mention we have 35 straight weeks of two shots a week, followed by three months of two shots every other week, followed by three months of two shots every third week???) Now where's that beer?

Happy birthday little bee

Dear Bitsy,
Today you are five. You woke up with a smile on your face, messy hair, and half of your pajamas missing. You're such a funny little thing; you have a great sense of humor, you say things that keep us on our toes constantly, and I think you've even won Boni cat over. You hum when you're happy (which is a lot) you stomp your feet and slam doors when you're not. You sing in the shower at the top of your lungs and your life motto seems to be "dance like no one is watching, sing like no one is listening, but be prepared enough that if you are watched, you look fabulous" Your fashion sense is 2nd to none and no one else makes polka dots, stripes and swirls look as good as you do. You love math, you love writing the alphabet, and maybe, just maybe you'll be a teacher--or a scientist--or an astronaut--or one of the other zillion things you talk about on a regular basis. Your birthday cake this year is going to have a green polar bear on it, per your request, and will be chocolate and delicious and I look forward to watching you dig in. You're an old soul, your soul is possibly older than my own  and every day with you is wonderful; even if you do give me grey hair (and then point them out to me).
I love you more than you'll ever know,
Momma

So Much Trouble

At dinner tonight, I asked Bits to please take her elbows off the table. She looked at me and asked "why is that a rule?" I told her it was rude and that we just don't do it. She muttered "well it's a dumb rule" and took her arms off the table. I have a bad feeling about this kid...she's gonna be trouble!
